Bhumyamalaki acts to cleanse, detoxify and strengthen the liver. It is very good in cases of fatty liver. It also supports proper function of the gall bladder and promotes healthy skin. An excellent herb for both pitta and kapha. This is the classic Ayurvedic herb for the liver.
The aboriginal people of the Amazon used Chanca Piedra (bhumyamalaki), to treat kidney and gall stones so it is called "stonebreaker". It has many soothing properties, particularly for the digestive system, and it is recommended to take on a full stomach. It is also used as a remedy for vaginitis caused by candida albicans in many parts of the world.
"A clinical study with Bhumyamalaki indicated that it may reduce the levels of urinary calcium. A subsequent study of 150 patients over a 6 month period indicated that an extract of this herb reduces the incidence of stone formation... A more recent rat study found that Bhumyamalaki has been shown to interfere with many stages of stone formation, reducing crystals aggregation, modifying their structure and composition as well as altering the interaction of the crystals with tubular cells leading to reduced subsequent endocytosis". Boim MA, Heilberg IP, Schor N. (December 2010). "Phyllanthus niruri as a promising alternative treatment for nephrolithiasis". Int Braz J Urol. 36 (6): 657–64. Do not use while pregnant, with Insulin, with diuretics, or with heart medications.

Bhumyamalaki is one of the ancient Ayurvedic herbs of the plant Phyllantus amarus. In some countries, it is also known as chanca piedra, carry me seed, or stonebreaker. Bhumyamalaki is being used as an herbal solution in every region, where it grows.
In the past few years, Bhumyamalaki has gained the attention of researchers from all around the world due to its hepatprotective activity. Clinical research has shown the efficacy of the herb Bhumyamalaki for treating viral Hepatitis B.
In the year 1990, Sao Paulo’s, ‘Paulista School of Medicine’ carried out studies on rats and humans with kidney stones. A decoction of the herb was given for 1 to 3 months and it was established that the herbal tea promoted the removal of kidney stones. There was also an increase in the creatine and sodium excretion and urine output. In the same year, Nicole Maxwell reported that Germany’s Dr. Wolfram Wiemann treated about 100 patients suffering from kidney stones with Bhumyamalaki obtained from Peru. It was found that the treatment was 94% successful in expelling the kidney stones in a short duration of one or two weeks.
In an in-vitro clinical study conducted in the year 1999, the extract of bhumyamalaki exhibited its ability to obstruct the creation of calcium-oxalate crystals, which are the building-blocks of kidney stones. This shows that the herb can be an effective preventative aid for those, who have a history of the ailment.
How it works for kidney stones--
It seems to remedy kidney stones in multiple ways. This is not a “one and done” type of supplement. In fact, one large scientific review came up with a long list of ways Chanca Piedra can help with kidney stones:
- Interferes with the stones as they form
- Reduces the aggregation of crystals
- Modifies the composition and the structure
- Relaxes the ureter
- Reduces urinary crystallization promoters (AKA calcium)
- Clears fragments after lithotripsy (an ultrasound shock wave to break kidney stones in small pieces)
"Altogether, these studies suggest a preventive effect of Phyllanthus niruri in stone formation or elimination.” This same review found no negative reactions to the urinary system, the heart, or the brain – and no toxic side effects have been noted.
Then we can get into other studies.
- Some German and Brazilian researchers believe that Chanca Piedra is not only a fabulous “stone breaker,” but also a “stone preventer.” Showing that the herb can “keep calcium crystals, especially crystals of calcium oxalate, from entering the kidney cells” in the first place.
- This makes sense when you consider another study showed Chanca Piedra reduces calcium in the urine.
