Erythema multiforme is an immune disorder, mucocutaneouscondition characterised by skin lesions. Episodes can be isolated, recurrent, or persistent.In most cases, erythema multiforme is precipitated by Herpes Simplex virus infection alongwith intake of NSAIDS. Other triggers include infections, medications, and vaccinations. Lesions present as concentric rings of colour. This skin condition is characterized by raised spots or lesions. There is often fatigue, fever and itching before lesions appear. It usually starts on the back of hands and top of the feet, then spreads from there. Many have mucous membrane involvement with the skin lesions. When more than 30% of the body is covered with lesions it is known as Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis. Mortality increases the more of the body is affected. The most severe form of erythema multiforme (erythema multiforme major) can become fatal. Erythema multiforme major is also known as Stevens-Johnson syndrome. It is usually caused by a medicine reaction rather than an infection.
