The Heart of the Earth
The living entity of our planet has been called Earth, Gaia and Pachamama by different cultures. What is it that animates this body? For centuries scientists, philosophers and religions have offered theories of what the Earth's center is composed of. Scientific evidence in this decade suggests that there's a giant crystal in the center of the Earth, more than 3,000 miles down.
"To understand what's deep in the Earth is a great challenge," says geophysicist Lars Stixrude. "Drill holes go down only 12 kilometers, about 0.2 percent of the Earth's radius. Most of the planet is totally inaccessible to direct observation." So their theory was developed primarily from seismic data. The record of these vibrations reveals variations in the path and speed to scientists who then drew inferences about the planet's inner structure. One unexpected observation has emerged from the seismic records: Seismic waves travel faster north-south than east-west, about four seconds faster pole-to-pole than through the equator. (Is the yogic injunction to always sleep facing north to south, or south to north but not east and west is related to this phenomenon? )
The seismic evidence has been confirmed and further research has advanced the conclusion that Earth's solid-iron crystal core has a directional quality, which allows sound waves to travel faster from north to south. "Hexagonal crystals have a unique directionality, says Stixrude "which must be aligned and oriented with Earth's spin axis for every crystal in the inner core." Although their initial thought was that there were many hexagonal crystals, it now seems more likely there is just one gigantic crystalline hexagon! That single crystal would be about 1,500 miles across. Further consideration of this idea has given other scientists the realization that the pressure and temperature of the inner core actually offer ideal conditions for the growth of a crystalline structure. An inner core that is strongly oriented would also explain certain anomalies in the Earth's magnetic field. Stixrude and Cohen continue their investigations with the CRAY C90 at Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center and their results have been published in Science.

The Breath of the Earth
The earth seems to usually resonate at the vibration of 7.8Hertz.. This is known as the Schumann Cavity Resonance as German physicist Professor W.O. Schumann of the Technical University of Munich predicted electromagnetic standing waves in the atmosphere, formed by tension of the surface of the earth and the ionosphere. This was confirmed in 1954 when resonances of 7.8 Hz were detected by Schumann. Many scientists since then, have researched the Schumann Resonance, independently confirmed it, and established a number of properties and characteristics. Though there was general agreement the resonance of the Earth was constant, it has unexpectedly changed in recent years to a vibration of 12 Hz. There are daily variations in the frequency, caused by an increase in ionization of the ionosphere as a result of radiation from the sun. This has the effect of reducing the height of the ionosphere at noon. Another factor influencing frequency is sunspot activity.
Robert Becker, MD in his book, The Body Electric, explains how his research stemming from the remarkable ability of some animals to regenerate limbs, led him to an understanding of the existence of electrical currents in the human nervous system in the 1960's. During this time the medical profession accepted only a mechanistic-chemical view of life. Dr. Becker was attacked and harassed for the results of his research, not only by the medical profession but by the American military.
Dr. Becker's focus of using extremely-low-frequency (ELF) electrical impulses to heal bone fractures led him to the realization that the healing vibrations were the same frequency as the ELF that is generated by the Earth and lightening in the cavity between the ionosphere and the surface.
The Schumann Resonance seems to have a profound influence on the mammalian brain. A Doctor Ankermueller, made the connection between the Schumann resonance and the alpha rhythm of brainwaves. He contacted Professor Schumann, who in turn asked a doctorate candidate to look into this phenomenon. This student, König, demonstrated a correlation between Schumann Resonances and brain rhythms. He compared human EEG recordings with natural electromagnetic fields of the environment in 1979 and found that the main frequency produced by Schumann oscillations is very close to the frequency of alpha rhythms.
Is it possible, without electric lines, cell-phone and radio signals, that we can find healing by tuning ourselves to this frequency? Are we able to feel the currents and surf of the magnetic galactic sea that washes through Earth's atmosphere and into our nervous systems?

4. 46 Tzolkins = 405 lunar months
5. 59 Tzolkins = 42 tropical years
6. 135 Tzolkins = 88 Jupiter synodic years
7. 137 Tzolkins = 61 Venus synodic years

Grandmother Moon
Awareness of the cycles of the moon helps us intuitively understand the ebb and flow of energy in Nature. Most of us are aware that the Moon affects tides in the ocean. The exchange of energy with the moon is more profound than that though; it also affects the Earth and other aspects of our being. The Moon's pull affects everything on Earth. Because it is much closer to us than the sun it exerts more than twice the "gravitational force". Many types of Moon-tides occur every day.
Ocean Tides
This is the most easily perceived of the types of Moon-tides. These two tides correspond to when the Moon is overhead and when it sets. As it travels around the Earth, the oceans move in relation. The most extreme tides occur around the full Moon and the new Moon. These were named by the Welsh "springan" which means to bulge. Since the orbit of the Moon is more elliptical than circular, it's distance from us, and its effect on tides, varies. Although the moon's phases occur within a 27 day period, it completes one orbit around us every 25 hours. We have two tidal peaks as well as two tidal troughs separated by about 12 hours.
Since the moon moves around the Earth as it is moving, the moon is not always in the same place at the same time each day.
Earth and Moon Tides
The Earth is actually stretched-out by the influence of the Moon as it travels across the Earth. The two tidal bulges of the Earth, on one side, and one on the opposite side are more difficult to see in the rock and ground than the water. The surface of our planet rises between four to 12 inches every day when the Moon is above the horizon, and recedes when the Moon moves out of our vision. Lunar tides also affect the core of the earth, causing it to wax and wane as well. This appears to be a contributing cause of earthquakes. Some scientists think that the pull of Uranus contributes to eruptions as well.
The tidal swellings do not line up exactly between the center of the Earth and the Moon. Since the Earth rotates, the swollen portions are swept forward. The swelling nearest the Moon is actually a bit ahead of the Earth-Moon line. That swelling has some mass which also pulls the Moon forward in its orbit a little; giving the Moon more orbital energy. An orbit with higher energy has a larger radius, and so as the swelling pulls the Moon forward, the Moon gets farther away from the Earth. This has been measured and is something like a few centimeters a year.
Of course, the Moon is pulling on the swelling as well. Since the Moon is "behind" the swelling (relative to the rotation of the Earth), it is pulling the swelling backwards, slowing it down. Because of friction with the rest of the Earth, this slowing of the swelling is actually slowing the rotation of the Earth! Thus, our days are measurably becoming longer (very gradually). Every few years scientists that measure these things must add a leap second to the year.
The Earth's rotation is decelerating at a rate of about seven seconds per year. The Earth is not really slowing its rotation by that amount; but clocks set by the rotating Earth lose time at that rate (as contrasted with an atomic clock). Scientists add "leap seconds" to the calendar to align the two clocks. Eventually, the Earth's rotation will slow down so much that the swelling will line up exactly between the centers of the Earth and the Moon. At some point the Earth will become rotationally locked with the Moon. When this happens, the Moon will no longer be pulling the swelling back, and the Earth's spin will stop slowing. The time it takes for the Earth to rotate once will be slowed to exactly the same time it takes for the Moon to go around the Earth once!
Since Earth's gravity is much stronger than the Moon's, the tides from the Earth on the Moon are much stronger than the Moon's tides on the Earth. The Moon has tidal bulges just like the Earth, and so it too is slowed by the Earth's pull on its nearer bulge. The moon also holds water, mostly at the poles in the form of ice crystals. The amount of ice is uncertain, but estimates are 10 - 300 million tons.
Though the moon is smaller and lighter than other planets, it is so close it’s gravitational and tidal effects are more noticeable than those caused by the Sun, Jupiter or Saturn. The Sun also causes tides on the Earth, and when these tides are combined with the moon tides (at the full and new moons) then they are called ’spring tides’. When they are counter to the moon’s tides (at the first and last quarter moons) then they are called ‘neap tides’.
Air Tides
There is still another medium that the Moon affects. This is the body of air that surrounds our planet. Our atmosphere extends about 60 miles. The Moon has a tide effect in this air mass, changing the height or thickness of the atmosphere every day. When it is overhead, the Moon's gravity pulls the atmosphere toward itself, sometimes by as much as 25%. This means that in certain phases of the Moon, the atmosphere bulges out an extra 15 miles. This creates higher pressure in the atmosphere closer to the Moon, and lower pressure on the other side of the Earth. When the Moon sinks below the horizon, the atmosphere again grows more dense. As the atmosphere is pulled around by the Moon it determines our weather to a large extent. Most cyclones, tornados, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes can be associated with a significant moon position. Even thunderstorms seem to be created when the Moon is in a certain phase and position. Folklore and oral traditions of many ancient cultures claim that the weather is cyclically predictable. Yet, curiously, the Moon's tides are not taken into consideration in weather forecasting.
Blood Tides
The Moon of course, interacts with all sentient beings as well as Earth and air. The most noticeable interaction is the monthly Moon cycle in women's endocrine system - the 28 day menstrual cycle. The very word menses derives from the word moon. Women who live in a group will begin their cycle together at the full moon. It is possible that artificial lighting, electrical lines, cell phones and even the wiring in our homes has disrupted our ability to synchronize ourselves with Grandmother Moon. You might check this information with your local hospital: more births seem to occur just after the full Moon, with fewer at the new Moon. Hemorrhaging increases at the Full Moon.
Moon Time
The Maya understood 17 different Calendars based on aspects of the Cosmos. Some of these calendars go back as far as ten million years and would require an astronomer, astrologer, geologist, and a mathematician to work out the calculations. There were also tables predicting eclipses and the orbit of the planet Venus. The Tun-Uc is the moon calendar. It uses 28 day cycles that mirror the women's menstrual cycle. This cycle of the moon is broken down into four smaller cycles of seven days each. The smaller cycles are the four phases of moon.
The calendar kept two different aspects of time; tonalpohualli and xiuhpohualli. The tonalpohualli was the 'counting of days.' It might have begun when ancient peoples observed that the sun crossed a certain zenith point near the Mayan city of Copan, every 260 days. One theory is that the calendar came from mathematical operations based on the numbers thirteen and twenty, which were important numbers to the Maya. The numbers multiplied together equal 260. Another theory is that the 260-day period came from the length of human pregnancy. It could be that midwives originally developed the calendar to predict babies' expected birth dates. These 260 days were then broken up into 20 periods, with each period containing 13 days, called trecenas. Each period was given the name of something that was then shown by a hieroglyphic sign, and each trecena was given a number 1-13. Each trecena is also thought to have a god or deity presiding over it.
The Inca seem to have had a calendar based on the observation of both the Sun and the Moon, and their relationship to the stars. Names of 12 lunar months are recorded, as well as their association with festivities of the agricultural cycle. The smallest unit of this calendar was a numerical count of three days, which, interacting with a similar count of 10 days, formed a standard 30-day "month." Every third year was made up of 13 moons, the others having 12. This formed a cycle of 37 moons, and 20 of these cycles made up a period of 60 years, which was subdivided into four parts and could be multiplied by 100. A period of 20 months is also mentioned. Although the account of the Chibcha system cannot be accepted at face value, if there is any truth in it at all it is suggestive of devices that may have been used also by the Inca.
The deity Viracocha established a year of 12 months, each beginning with the New Moon. His successor, Pachacuti, improving upon it, built sun towers in order to keep a check on the calendar. In Cuzco, the capital city of the Inca, there was an official calendar of the sidereal-lunar type, based on the sidereal month of 27 1/3 days. It consisted of 328 nights coinciding with the heliacal rising (the rising
just after sunset) of the Pleiades. It ended on the first full Moon after the June solstice (the winter solstice for the Southern Hemisphere).

"The orbits of protons in the 27-kilometre Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have to be adjusted regularly to account for the gravitational effect of the moon. The instantaneous luminosity measured last weekend – when the moon was full – by the two largest detectors at the LHC, CMS and ATLAS. Instantaneous luminosity is a measure of how many collisions happen per second in each experiment between the two beams of protons circulating in opposite directions in the LHC tunnel."
Moon Ceremony
The ancient Laika moon ritual uses " fire arrows" to set one's intent and smoke to send that prayer to the heavens. During the course of the ceremony the nature spirits are invited in so that we can honor them. This time can also be used to release earthbound souls as well. See also the Healing page.
Song of the Sun
Does the Sun sing our solar system into being? Johannes Kepler spent much of his life trying to describe the working of the “music of the spheres” which was a scientific belief in his time and before. From these efforts histhird lawwas developed that relates the period of revolution of Earth, to the average distance from the sun. The formula describing this law can compute any other planets average distance from the sun if the period of revolution is known. This is the result of his efforts to describe planetary motion in terms of musical harmony. Though this may seem quaint today scientists and indigenous peoples seem to be still exploring the concept of “the music of the spheres.” In Scientific American 68.2.1, there is a note that “Another method was found to calculate planet position by use of harmonic numbers found and derived from Mayan astronomical calculations.” This is a recording of the acoustic waves of the sun made by NASA. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2eQPOo95l0&feature=related
Indeed the past few decades have found astrophysicists discovering that our local star generates acoustic waves (sound waves) at frequencies reflected in the intervals of the planets in our solar system. Five-minute oscillations in the Sun's atmosphere were discovered by Leighton and his colleagues in the 1960's. By the 1980's it was realized that these were actually acoustic waves occurring at intervals of 5, 20, 60 and 160 minutes (Longair, High Energy Astrophysics). These acoustic, or sound waves, seem to vibrate according to the speed of sound at various depths of the Sun. John Keelys Law of Corporeal Vibrations states, in essence, that everything can be understood as the result of vibration. Each object or being has a vibration signature. When harmonic relations are formed between two bodies, a vibration and its chords will simultaneously occur in the other body. Quantum mechanics has called this phenomenon superluminal, pilot waves etc. This would explain, at least on an energetic level, why all the planets in our solar system are changing in the same ways.
In humans hearing is limited to frequencies between about 20 Hertz and 20,000 Hz, with perception of the upper frequencies often decreasing with age. Hertz measures the number of cycles per second. Though some people have claimed to hear these low frequency acoustic vibrations, most only “hear” the Sun through instruments.
Swiss astronomers Francois Bouchy and Fabien Carrier from the Geneva Observatory are exploring the acoustics of the star Alpha Centauri A. As the nearest star visible to the naked eye, at a distance of a about four light-years their measurements show that this star pulsates with a seven-minute cycle, very similar to what is observed in the Sun.
The longstanding "dynamo" theory of the Sun is not congruent with these findings. An electric model of the Sun takes into consideration the interaction of magnetic waves with these acoustic waves and explains the intense heat of the corona, which property mystifies proponents of the dynamo theory.
My Peruvian teachers say "Fifteen to 20 minutes' sun on top of head will help restore our pineal gland (a cosmic antenna), whose fine crystalline particles have been calcified. The toxic form of fluoride that's dumped into public water supply in Australia, U.K. and USA, collects in this gland more than any other part of the body. Sodium fluoride is an inorganic chemical compound, waste product of the aluminium, fertiliser and nuclear industries. It's causing aggressive behaviours, learning difficulty and much more".
Sunspots
According to Discovery News, "When the sun generates a coronal mass ejection or CME, a huge "bubble" of magnetism is accelerated through the solar atmosphere (the corona)... Trapped within the magnetic field are highly energetic particles called plasma. On Sept. 1-2, 1859, our planet was hit bythe largest recorded solar storm. The "Carrington Event" was named after English amateur astronomer Richard Carrington who observed some extreme sunspot activity erupt on the sun. A day later, aurorae erupted and could be seen as far south as Hawaii -- a sign of intense magnetospheric activity.
The National Science Foundation's website at http://www.nsf.gov/news/ explains the 11 year cycles of the sun and some recent unexpected changes. "The sun goes through cycles lasting approximately 11 years that include phases with increased magnetic activity, more sunspots, and more solar flares, and phases with less activity".
"Understanding and predicting the solar cycle allows us to better prepare for coming space weather effects and, equally importantly, enables us to make more accurate decadal predictions of global climate change," says Richard Behnke of NSF's Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences.
The occurrence of solar cycles has been reconstructed going back in time about 300 years.
Puzzlingly, solar cycle 23, the one that ended in 2008, lasted longer than previous cycles, with a prolonged phase of low activity that scientists had difficulty explaining. The new analysis suggests that one reason for the long cycle could be changes in the sun's conveyor belt.
Just as Earth's global ocean circulation transports water and heat around the planet, the sun has a conveyor belt in which plasma flows along the surface toward the poles, sinks, and returns toward the equator, transporting magnetic flux along the way".

Faster Than the Speed of Light?
Neutrinos are emitted by the Sun on a regular basis. The following is part of on-going research seeking to understand neutrinos.
"The data come from a 1300-metric-ton particle detector named Oscillation Project with Emulsion-tRacking Apparatus (OPERA). Lurking in Italy's subterranean Gran Sasso National Laboratory, OPERA detects neutrinos that are fired through the earth from the European particle physics laboratory, CERN, near Geneva, Switzerland. As the particles hardly interact at all with other matter, they stream right through the ground, with only a very few striking the material in the detector and making a noticeable shower of particles.
Over 3 years, OPERA researchers timed the roughly 16,000 neutrinos that started at CERN and registered a hit in the detector. They found that, on average, the neutrinos made the 730-kilometer, 2.43-millisecond trip roughly 60 nanoseconds faster than expected if they were traveling at light speed. "It's a straightforward time-of-flight measurement," says Antonio Ereditato, a physicist at the University of Bern and spokesperson for the 160-member OPERA collaboration. "We measure the distance and we measure the time, and we take the ratio to get the velocity, just as you learned to do in high school." Ereditato says the uncertainty in the measurement is 10 nanoseconds". http://news.sciencemag.org/sciencenow/2011/09/neutrinos-travel-faster-than-lig.html
The Mystery of "Space" article by NASA scientists
More is unknown than is known. We know how much dark energy there is because we know how it affects the Universe's expansion. Other than that, it is a complete mystery. But it is an important mystery. It turns out that roughly 68% of the Universe is dark energy. Dark matter makes up about 27%. The rest - everything on Earth, everything ever observed with all of our instruments, all normal matter - adds up to less than 5% of the Universe. Come to think of it, maybe it shouldn't be called "normal" matter at all, since it is such a small fraction of the Universe.
One explanation for dark energy is that it is a property of space. Albert Einstein was the first person to realize that empty space is not nothing. Space has amazing properties, many of which are just beginning to be understood. The first property that Einstein discovered is that it is possible for more space to come into existence. Then one version of Einstein's gravity theory, the version that contains acosmological constant, makes a second prediction: "empty space" can possess its own energy. Because this energy is a property of space itself, it would not be diluted as space expands. As more space comes into existence, more of this energy-of-space would appear. As a result, this form of energy would cause the Universe to expand faster and faster. Unfortunately, no one understands why the cosmological constant should even be there, much less why it would have exactly the right value to cause the observed acceleration of the Universe.
Dark Matter Core Defies Explanation
This image shows the distribution of dark matter, galaxies, and hot gas in the core of the merging galaxy cluster Abell 520. The result could present a challenge to basic theories of dark matter.
Another explanation for how space acquires energy comes from the quantum theory of matter. In this theory, "empty space" is actually full of temporary ("virtual") particles that continually form and then disappear. But when physicists tried to calculate how much energy this would give empty space, the answer came out wrong - wrong by a lot. The number came out 10120 times too big. That's a 1 with 120 zeros after it. It's hard to get an answer that bad. So the mystery continues.
Another explanation for dark energy is that it is a new kind of dynamical energy fluid or field, something that fills all of space but something whose effect on the expansion of the Universe is the opposite of that of matter and normal energy. Some theorists have named this "quintessence," after the fifth element of the Greek philosophers. But, if quintessence is the answer, we still don't know what it is like, what it interacts with, or why it exists. So the mystery continues.
A last possibility is that Einstein's theory of gravity is not correct. That would not only affect the expansion of the Universe, but it would also affect the way that normal matter in galaxies and clusters of galaxies behaved. This fact would provide a way to decide if the solution to the dark energy problem is a new gravity theory or not: we could observe how galaxies come together in clusters. But if it does turn out that a new theory of gravity is needed, what kind of theory would it be? How could it correctly describe the motion of the bodies in the Solar System, as Einstein's theory is known to do, and still give us the different prediction for the Universe that we need? There are candidate theories, but none are compelling. So the mystery continues.
The thing that is needed to decide between dark energy possibilities - a property of space, a new dynamic fluid, or a new theory of gravity - is more data, better data.
What Is Dark Matter?
One of the most complicated and dramatic collisions between galaxy clusters ever seen is captured in this new composite image of Abell 2744. The blue shows a map of the total mass concentration (mostly dark matter).
By fitting a theoretical model of the composition of the Universe to the combined set of cosmological observations, scientists have come up with the composition that we described above, ~68% dark energy, ~27% dark matter, ~5% normal matter. What is dark matter?
We are much more certain what dark matter is not than we are what it is. First, it is dark, meaning that it is not in the form of stars and planets that we see. Observations show that there is far too little visible matter in the Universe to make up the 27% required by the observations. Second, it is not in the form of dark clouds of normal matter, matter made up of particles called baryons. We know this because we would be able to detect baryonic clouds by their absorption of radiation passing through them. Third, dark matter is not antimatter, because we do not see the unique gamma rays that are produced when antimatter annihilates with matter. Finally, we can rule out large galaxy-sized black holes on the basis of how many gravitational lenses we see. High concentrations of matter bend light passing near them from objects further away, but we do not see enough lensing events to suggest that such objects to make up the required 25% dark matter contribution.
However, at this point, there are still a few dark matter possibilities that are viable. Baryonic matter could still make up the dark matter if it were all tied up in brown dwarfs or in small, dense chunks of heavy elements. These possibilities are known as massive compact halo objects, or "MACHOs". But the most common view is that dark matter is not baryonic at all, but that it is made up of other, more exotic particles like axions or WIMPS (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles)
The Inca Sun
"The mists of pre-Inca history, we are informed, veil from our eyes four successive epochs. The people of the first age, Pacarimoc runa (Beginning People) were simple wandering agriculturists of white skin, they inhabited caves and lived at peace with each other and the beasts of the field. Though primitive they were blessed in their religion, for they worshipped Viracocha, the Creator, as the one and only god...." from Empire of the Inca, Brundage. The next group, Huari runa (Origin People) built huts for themselves, wore skins and continued to live peacefully. The third group, Purun runa (Wilderness People) began to make laws, to weave, make kings, herd animals and move around quite a bit. There was a diversity of languages and they began to fight with each other. The fourth age belonged to the Aucapacha runa (Wartime People). Ruthlessness and cunning were encouraged and many of the more peaceful individuals moved to the barren elevations of the Andes. It was after this age, that God sent his children, the four Ayar brothers and their wives, to found Cuzco, the sacred city and capital of the Inca empire. This group of four men and four women began negotiating with the other tribes of the land. Those tribes included the Antasaya, Sausiray, Hualla, Tambo, Alcaviza, and later the Nazca and Huarcos.
The Incas continued worshipping the Earth goddess, Pachamama and the Sun god, Inti. The Incan language was based on nature and all of the elements had a divine character. The Incas understood that all deities were created by an ever-lasting, invisible, and all-powerful Creator-God called Viracocha. Unlike the patriarchal religions of Islam, Christianity and Judaism, the Inca people understood both male and female gender to represent Divinity. There seems to be a tendency for many archaeologists to interpret past cultures according to their own, so the reverence for the feminine principle of the universe in Peruvian traditions has been muted by those who have interpreted it afterward. The religious and societal center of Inca life was contained in Cuzco, (Naval of the World). This was the home of the Inca Lord and site of the sacred Temple of the Sun where gold and silver decorated every edifice. A labor program called the "mita" required the Inca people to spend time, after their own needs were met, working on temple-owned fields, building bridges, roads, temples, and terraces, or extracting gold and silver from the mines. The Inca were skilled agriculturists, aware of the different elevations required for each plant species, and creating an extensive outdoor laboratory for hybridizing plants. It is this tremendous organization and study of the plant world that made the Inca the greatest agriculturists of all time.
Inti Raymi, or "feast of the sun" an annual celebration, was the biggest, most important, festivity in Inca times. A similar ceremony was probably carried out over the winter solstice (which is June in Peru) by the native tribes including the Q'ero for millenia before the Incas took over their land.
Preparations were carried out in the Koricancha (Sun Temple aligned with the solstice sunrise), in the Aqllawasi (House of Chosen Women), and the Haukaypata or Wakaypata that was the northeastern sector of the great Main Square. Three days before the ceremony, all the population fasted and abstained from sex. Before dawn the nobility of Cusco, presided over by the Inca and the Willaq Uma (High Priest) walked barefoot, as a sign of respect, to the Haukaypata (the Plaza's ceremonial portion), or the Kusipata (southwestern portion). Prior to this the "Mallki" (mummies of noble ancestors) were brought and located so that they could "witness" the ceremony. Everyone waited for sunrise. The population greeted the Sun God with singing and the "much'ay," (offering kisses with the fingertips). The Inca emperor then took two very polished gold chalices, called "akilla", that reflected the sun's brilliance, containing chicha, a maize beer, made by the chosen women. The beverage was offered to the Sun and then poured into a golden channel connecting the Plaza with the Sun Temple. The Inca then drank a sip of chicha from the other akilla and the remaining was drunk in sips by those close to him and later offered to everyone.
The high priest produced the sacred fire. Standing in front of the Sun he concentrated its rays in a concave gold medallion that contained some material that would produce the fire to be kept during the next year in the Koricancha and Aqllawasi. Subsequently the priests offered "sanqhu", a holy bread prepared from corn flour and blood of a sacrificed llama. After being nourished, people were entertained with music, dances and abundant chicha.
Cieza de Leon, a contemporary of Gonzalo Pizarro, traveled to Peru in 1547 and gave a fairly unbiased view of what he saw. Although many of the conquistadores were illiterate, Cieza kept extensive notes on his travels. When it came to be published years later "the office of the Inquisition suppressed most of it" (Thomson, The White Rock). Cieza's recorded conversations with the Quechua showed that the Inca's had bribed other tribes into joining with them more often than going to war with them. Meanwhile the conquistadors promoted rumors that the Incas practiced sodomy, among other slanders, in order to justify their war own crimes.
Some of the other, more lasting civilizations, that preceeded the Incas were the Moche of northern Peru, the Huari in the central part of the country, the Tiahuanaco near lake Titicaca and the Chavin de Huantar going back to 500 BC.

The Laika
After the Spanish murdered the leaders of the Peruvian people, melted down their gold and silver, and taken over their land, they sometimes tolerated the healers. Their own medicine at that time was very poor, so the curanderos and curanderas of the Incas were taken into service, but the wise women and men (laikas) were burned as witches if they were found. Even at the time of the Incas these Q'ero "laika" or shamans were not part of the state religion but practiced a mystical (experiential) philosophy that goes back at least 35,000 years.
The laika and their families successfully hid from the Spanish for over 500 years, living high in the Andes at about 16,000 feet and keeping the indigenous spiritual traditions alive. These traditions would have died with the laika if they had not survived. Lima, Peru has still, the only office of the Catholic Inquisition in the world. The laika carry much information about our relationship to the Sun. They began coming down from the Andes and passing on the ancient traditions in the 1950's.
One of the prophecies of the laika is that a shaman will come from the west to heal the world. The Q'ero shamans (laika) are eager to pass on their ancient traditions, techniques, rituals and wisdom to fulfill this and other prophecies. The Medicine Wheel is a course of action put into form by Alberto Villoldo from the Laika tradition to: realize your connection to Nature and Spirit, prepare for the coming earth changes, shed your past and renew yourself, learn to walk as a luminous warrior, acquire the ability to heal yourself and others, become a bridge between heaven and earth, stand in balance and power, connect with the lineage of the laika and evolve into homo luminous.
From the lineage of Don Antonio to Alberto Villoldo, John English to Ginger and Dale Lee, Athena Wolf conveys this tradition of healing through the process of the Peruvian medicine wheel.

Inka Shomei is a Zen or Buddhist term in the Japanese language that translates as "the legitimate seal of clearly furnished proof." The master confirms that his student has completed his training by conferring the title, "Inka" on him or her.
