Bhumymalaki acts to cleanse, detoxify and strengthen this essential organ. It also supports proper function of the gall bladder and promotes healthy skin. An excellent herb for both pitta and kapha. This is the classic Ayurvedic herb for the liver.
"A clinical study with Bhumyamalaki indicated that it may reduce the levels of urinary calcium. Boim MA, Heilberg IP, Schor N. (December 2010). "Phyllanthus niruri as a promising alternative treatment for nephrolithiasis". Int Braz J Urol. 36 (6): 657–64. Do not use while pregnant, with Insulin, with diuretics, or with heart medications.
Guduchi strengthens all of the dhatu agnis, which are responsible for fat metabolism. Guduchi enhances the quality of fat for the entire body. Another way to say this is that it supports the production of ojas, which is the master coordinator between consciousness, the doshas, tissues and metabolism for the whole body — including fat tissue and fat metabolism. "Plasma total cholesterol, triglycerides, free fatty acids and phospholipids in untreated diabetic rats were elevated to high levels during this study period. TC treatment for 10 and 30 days in diabetic rats showed a significant reduc-tion (p< 0.05) in all these lipids profile (Table.1) levels compared to untreated diabetic animals." https://www.alliedacademies.org/articles/efficacy-of-tinospora-cordifolia-willd-extracts-on-blood-lipid-profile-in-streptozotocin-diabetic-rats-is-it-beneficial-to-the-hea.html
Guggul increases fat metabolism and brings the plant medicine deep into the tissues. It is a purified myrrh. Many of these Ayurvedic herbs have been examined in modern research studies. In a double-blind study published in Science, Guggul was shown to reduce cholesterol as much as cholesterol-lowering drugs, but without the harmful side effects.
Shilajit enhances metabolism and prevents nutrients from being lost in the metabolic process. It provides minerals that are easy to assimilate.
Manjistha helps bring balance to the interaction between the liver and blood plasma, thus creating purer blood by screening out toxins. It also moves the lymph.
Trikatu, enhances absorption and thus makes the other herbs in the formula easier to assimilate. "It was found that 'Trikatu' by virtue of its ability to reduce triglycerides and LDL cholesterol and to increase HDL cholesterol can reduce the risk of hyperlipidaemia and atherosclerosis. Hence 'Trikatu' can be used as a potent hypolipidaemic agent and it can reduce the atherosclerosis associated with a high fat diet." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15742354
Licorice balances all three doshas and especially helps cool inflammation. It also increases bioavailability of the other ingredients in the formula. "Ethanolic extract of licorice root has been shown to reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation in atherosclerotic mice and in both hypercholesterolemic and normal lipidemic humans." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4845696/
Triphala includes Haritaki, Amalaki, and Bibhitaki, helps scrub the colon and remove cholesterol from the body through the bowel. Some of the many benefits of triphala for the digestive system are expressed in this study. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5567597/
