These are a few studies confirming the Ayurvedic use of these plant medicines.
"The study was categorized into two groups: Group I, treated and
Group II, control. In all albino rats, stone was surgically implanted into the urinary bladder. Estimation of the urinary and serum electrolyte done periodically and x-rays were exposed at a regular interval. This study suggests the decoction of Varuna (Crataeva nurvala) is effective in the management of urolithiasis." https://www.researchgate.net/publication/51844162_Urolithic_property_of_Varuna_Crataeva_nurvala_An_experimental_study
This recent study on the use of this formula found that "Clinical study showed very good results in the groups administered with Ayurvedic formulations in comparison to Allopathic management. Again the group administered with Punarnavadi compound has shown a very good result by improving the quality of life of patients. Lastly, gathering data from different observations, Punarnavadi compound can be concluded as an herb having a very potent anti-oxidant property against uremic toxicity in patients of chronic renal failure along with mild nephro-protective activity without any adverse drug reactions." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3215362/
"Results A total of 120 patients were screened and 84 were enrolled who met the eligibility criteria, of which 65 patients completed the trial (treatment, n = 34; placebo, n = 31). The VAS score significantly decreased in the treatment group (6.9–1.8) than placebo group (7.2–6.8) (p < 0.001). The surface area and density were decreased by 47.58% (p < 0.008) and 43.01% (p < 0.001), respectively, in the treatment group than the placebo group. The expulsion of calculi was significantly higher in the treatment group than placebo group (20.59 vs. 3.23%, p < 0.03).
Conclusion
Patients treated with Varuna herbal formulation showed better expulsion rate and reduction in surface area and density than the placebo group." https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0975947617304084
Varuna or three leaved caper, is the herb of choice for all urinary problems which include kidney stones, painful, and/or burning urination.
It is diuretic, rubefacient (reddening the skin) and anti-inflammatory. The bark of varuna is believed to have antioxidant, contraceptive, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and urinary-renal supportive qualities, the root is laxative and the leaves are considered to be stomachic and tonic.
Varuna is a known litholytic herb (ability to break up stones). It is indicated that lupeol, a constituent of varuna, deactivates the enzyme glycolate oxidase which reduces the production of oxalates in the body which in turn combine with calcium to form kidney stones. This mechanism of Varuna makes it a litholytic herb.
This article describes this formula which has been used in Ayurveda for thousands of years. https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/life-style/health-fitness/health-news/expert-approved-ayurvedic-herbs-for-patients-with-chronic-kidney-disease/articleshow/90121736.cms
