Some symptoms are; tremors occurring when the person is resting, rigidity, loss of facial expression and abnormalities when walking. This disease was described in the Charaka Samhita, one of the oldest books of Ayurveda. In this tradition Parkinson's is seen as a vata imbalance. Kappi Kachu, or mucuna has been used for centuries for this imbalance alongwith several other therapies.
"When in the 1960s dopamine deficiency was linked to Parkinson’s, levodopa was extracted from mucuna seeds (Kappi Kachu) until it was artificially manufactured. Interest has grown in recent years in using mucuna based levodopa and several studies have been carried out. A trial at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London in 2004 compared the effects of two types of mucuna based medications with synthetic levodopa treatment and had encouraging results, suggesting that mucuna may have advantages over synthetic levodopa for long-term use. Further follow up trials are required." From the European Parkinson's Disease Association.
