Causes
Usually caused by herpes type 1 but other viruses and fungi can cause these ulcers as well. Outbreaks are brought on by NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), Herpes labialis. There was one reported case of a certain toothpaste causing this issue. Other triggers include shingles, mycoplasma pneumonia, sulfa drugs, penicillin, anti-seizure medications.
Symptoms
This skin condition is characterized by raised spots or lesions. There is often fatigue, fever and itching before lesions appear. It usually starts on the back of hands and top of the feet, then spreads from there. Many have mucous membrane involvement with the skin lesions. When more than 30% of the body is covered with lesions it is known as Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis. Mortality increases the more of the body is affected.
Treatment
Drink Rose hip tea. Use golden seal for infections. These herbs are made into a formula depending on the dosha of the individual affected: Manjistha, amla, gokshura, guduchi, usher (vetiveria zizanioidis), kutki, musta. If mucous membranes are severely affected one should also use triphala and neem leaf.
To prevent recurrence these herbs are given to stimulate the immune system: ashwagandha, tulsi, bhringaraj, shatavari. You can find all of these herbs on this site.
