Also known as Hadjod or Cissus quadrangularis, this succulent vine from India has been used in Ayurveda for thosands of years. It is also one of the most commonly used medicinal plants in Thailand and Africa. All parts of the plant are used for medicine. The literal meaning of the Sanskrit term “Asthisamharaka” is “that which protects the bones and saves it from destruction”. The plant has been mentioned in all ancient scriptures of Ayurveda as a general tonic and analgesic.
This plant has been used for obesity, diabetes, heart disease risk factors called “metabolic syndrome,” and high cholesterol. It has also been used for bone fractures, osteoporosis, scurvy, cancer, hemorrhoids, peptic ulcer disease, painful menstrual periods, asthma, malaria, and pain.
