The University of Maryland Medical Center says that one study found that Kalmegh, combined with eleuthero or Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus) helped reduce symptoms and shorten the duration of the flu. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take Kalmegh.
A study found that people who took Eleuthero over a period of 4 weeks had higher levels of T cells than those who did not. A set of unique compounds found in this herb known as eleutherosides can stimulate the immune system.
This study demonstrates that Eleuthero can raise the level of certain immune cells that are useful to the immune system defense against common cold and influenza viruses.
A few studies also found that the combination of Eleuthero with Kalmegh “cured” the flu faster than amantadine, a prescription flu medication. http://www.progressivehealth.com/natural-herbs-for-colds-and-flu-symptoms.html
"Eleuthero use dates back 2,000 years, according to Chinese medicine records. Referred to as ci wu jia in Chinese medicine, it was used to prevent respiratory tract infections, colds and flu. It was also believed to provide energy and vitality. In Russia, eleuthero was originally used by people in the Siberian Taiga region to increase performance and quality of life and to decrease infections.
In more modern times, eleuthero has been used to increase stamina and endurance in Soviet Olympic athletes. Russian explorers, divers, sailors, and miners also used eleuthero to prevent stress-related illness. After the Chernobyl accident, many Russian and Ukrainian citizens were given eleuthero to counteract the effects of radiation." http://www.uofmhealth.org/health-library/hn-2084007

“On the total assessment 80% cases of this series were cured and 20% patients were relieved. Therefore, Kalmegh appears to be a useful remedy for the treatment of infective hepatitis.” http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3336768/
“…the present study revealed that the extracts of A. paniculata or S. chirayita offered protection against hepatotoxicity induced by paracetamol.” http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21983487
The study indicates that the regenerative capability elicited by kalmegh is possibly due to its ability to reactivate liver function enzymes that catalyze the reaction of several biochemical and synthetic processes and that it may be useful for severe liver damage conditions. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19679627
“Oral administration of a single dose of kalmegh leaf extract to adult male albino rats produced a dose-related and time-dependent characteristic activation of brush-border membrane-bound hydrolases, viz. lactase, maltase and sucrase in three regions of small intestine… Maximum stimulation of lactase and maltase was noted after 30 consecutive days of treatment while sucrase exhibited maximum activation after 15 consecutive of treatment with either KE or A. These results suggest that both KE and A accelerate intestinal digestion and absorption of carbohydrate by activating these intestinal disaccharidases. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3938507
