Bronchitis is a respiratory disease that occurs when the lining, or mucus membrane, of the passages in the lungs become swollen and inflamed. When this happens, the irritated passageways swell and become thinner making it difficult for air to pass through properly. This leads to feelings of not being able to get enough air in the lungs which results in coughing and mucus build up. Other symptomscan be stuffy or runny nose, sore throat and fever.
The causes of acute bronchitis are usually due to viruses or less often, bacterial infections in the respiratory system. If bronchitis becomes frequent, it can damage the airway passages and can lead to chronic bronchitis. Pollution and smoking are also common causes behind the development of chronic bronchitis.
From Rodale Press "Studies are finding that yoga and Ayurvedic medicine can be particularly effective in treating the diseases, writes Ashley Maltz, MD, MPH, from the Stamford (CT) Hospital and Center for Integrative Medicine and Wellness, in the most recent issue of the journal, Alternative and Complementary Therapies."
- Mullein and Licorice tea Mullein leaves and flowers promote the discharge of mucus and soothes irritated mucous membranes. Historically, mullein has been used by herbalists as a remedy for the respiratory tract, particularly in cases of irritating coughs with bronchial congestion. Licorice tea can have a positive effect on respiratory illnesses like bronchitis because it works in the same way that an expectorant would. It can be useful in breaking down mucus build up, allowing it to be expelled easier from the body. Drinking licorice tea can also help offer therapeutic benefits for a sore inflamed throat as well which can be caused by excessive coughing due to bronchitis. One of the main ingredients in licorice, glycyrrhizin, aids those who suffer from bronchitis because it has many antiviral and antibacterial properties.
- Trikatu and Holy Basil: A mixture of equal parts Piper nigrum (black pepper), Piper longum (long pepper), and dried ginger, it's has been used for thousands of years to remove congestion and act as a stimulant. Taking the mixture regularly also strengthens your immune system, which can fight off bouts of acute bronchitis. Take one hour before two meals. Also contains Holy Basil: This herb is often used to treat lung inflammation in India.
Tiger Balm contains ingredients that may help relieve sinus and chest congestion. Some have been used for centuries in oils, ointments, and inhalant form to ease congestion from colds and allergies.
Camphor acts as a mild expectorant, nasal decongestant, and cough suppressant. Menthol may help soothe irritated nasal passageways, helping to relieve stuffy noses.
